About Us
OffBeat was founded in 2022 by Mike Hankin and Rita Conry as a small film night for friends. It has since grown into a wider project exploring what folk culture means today.
We host regular events across London and, in 2025, launched the first ever film festival dedicated to folk culture in Britain, a week of sold-out screenings, talks, and music featuring 48 contemporary films made by people across the country.
OffBeat began by sharing overlooked archive films about folk, heritage, and working life in the UK. Today, our work continues to celebrate and connect the culture, art, and stories of everyday people, offering a joined-up, inclusive picture of what it is to be British.
